Mackenzie Health has earned the 2020 College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Digital Health Most Wired recognition. Mackenzie Health is the only Canadian recipient to be recognized this year.
The CHIME Digital Health Most Wired program conducts an annual survey to assess how effectively health care organizations apply technology into their clinical and business programs to improve the way they deliver care in their communities. Leveraging the robust technology system it already had in place, Mackenzie Health was able to deliver quick and effective solutions to address challenges associated with delivering care during a global pandemic and is being recognized for it.
More than 30,000 organizations were represented in the 2020 Digital Health Most Wired program, which assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in health care organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading.
Here are a few of the achievements highlighted in Mackenzie Health’s survey results:
Population Health: Mackenzie Health assisted local public health units in identifying the geographic location of confirmed COVID-19 cases to identify hot spots in our community and concentrate public health efforts.
Telemedicine: Mackenzie Health rapidly deployed secure video technology to deliver more than 40,000 virtual care visits to Mackenzie Health patients since the start of the pandemic.
Data Analytics: Mackenzie Health expedited the rescheduling of surgical procedures that had been postponed at the start of the pandemic by using data analytics dashboards and an analysis of key metrics, including hospital critical care capacity, medication and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) availability and the burden of COVID-19 in the community to begin scheduling priority procedures.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to use technology to improve the patient experience and the way we deliver care,” says Dr. Aviv Gladman, Chief Information Officer, Mackenzie Health. “We’re close to realizing our two-hospital future with the opening of our second hospital – Canada’s first smart hospital – early next year. Patients in our community can look forward to a seamless health care experience aided by the use of smart technologies at both Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.”
This is not the first time Mackenzie Health has been recognized for its investments in technology and the way it’s used to improve the way care is delivered. In 2018, the organization was named a CHIME Most Wired recipient for the first time receiving level 6 certification and improved to a level 7 certification this year. Mackenzie Health is also the first Canadian acute care hospital to receive the highest certification for electronic medical record adoption. It was also awarded the Davies Award of Excellence for its use of health information and technology to improve care for patients and families and, this past June, received the 3M Health Care Quality Team Award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders for its use of technology to care for stroke patients.
