The fifth floor is taking shape!
We’re excited to announce that construction of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital continues to move ahead as planned with Level 5 being poured for the dialysis, mental health and integrated stroke units. With every floor poured, we get closer to welcoming patients and families through the doors of our new hospital.
Patients with chronic kidney disease and their families can look forward to the latest in dialysis care in the Carlo and Angela Baldassarra Family Inpatient Dialysis Unit. Here, patients requiring dialysis will receive treatment in bright, inviting and accessible spaces designed to best meet their health needs in a friendly and calm atmosphere. For patients with complex needs, dialysis can be delivered at bedside; for others, there will be an option of open treatment areas, with lots of daylight, TV and space for a family member to visit – ensuring that no matter your health needs, every patient finds comfort and care here.
For patients who have suffered a stroke, the Sorbara Integrated Stroke Unit (part of the Sorbara District Stroke Centre for York Region) will focus on recovery and rehabilitation to help them best return to their daily activities. Seventy-five per cent of the patient rooms will be private, and state-of-the-art care will be provided in a space that feels like home to help patients regain their independence. We’re also designing open spaces for families and patients to comfortably gather and spend quality time together, and a rehabilitation gym with direct access to natural daylight to support patients on their road to recovery.
Safety by design is an important element of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital Mental Health Unit. Designed with wellness and comfort in mind, the mental health unit has two inner courtyards, group therapy rooms and two exercise therapy gyms for inpatient and outpatient use. The mental health unit is designed to provide a safe environment with the best care to help support patients in their return to home, when they’re ready.
Largest-ever gift directed to new Learning Centre
We’re thrilled and grateful for the support of the De Gasperis and Kohn families for their recent historic $20 million gift – the largest single donation Mackenzie Health Foundation has ever received – which will help build and equip the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and be directed to the Learning Centre. The Giovanni De Gasperis ♦ Eugene Kohn Learning Centre, which will be located on Level 1, will be the most technologically-advanced education facility within a Canadian community hospital, featuring clinical teaching and simulation labs, conference and learning spaces, and a state-of-the-art auditorium for transformative and large-scale health care forums, complete with high-tech innovations. The Giovanni De Gasperis ♦ Eugene Kohn Learning Centre will go above and beyond the traditional scope of a community hospital by blending education and practice so our patients benefit from the latest knowledge and techniques, and inspire confidence in our community and in our patients.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, Mackenzie Health Foundation has now raised more than $103 million towards our $250 million campaign goal. Thank you!
