Today, the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital project achieved a major milestone for Ontario and reached the highest point in its construction.
Mackenzie Health was joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care; Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan, Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure, and the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, Mayor of Vaughan, to celebrate this milestone. Thousands of tokens signed by members of York Region’s community – including donors, hospital staff, physicians, leadership and government – were poured into one of Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital’s final concrete slabs. The signed tokens represent a shared commitment to building a healthier future for Ontario’s patients and families.
For patients and families in York Region, there is an immediate need for access to critical and specialized health care services close to home. Together, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital alongside its community-based locations will care for one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, which is expected to grow by 25 per cent between 2012-2027.
Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital will be the first new hospital to be built in York Region in more than 30 years and the first-ever hospital in the City of Vaughan. Scheduled to open in late 2020, the 1.2 million sq. ft., state-of-the art hospital will feature fully-integrated ‘smart’ technology systems and medical devices – a national first for any community hospital. ‘Smart’ technologies will support health care professionals in coordinating care around the needs of patients and families, including real-time tracking of patient locations to enable faster emergency response. The hospital will also feature modern surgical services and operating rooms, advanced medical imaging and speciality care including mental health, integrated stroke programs, pediatrics and more.
Increased access to high-quality health care through the addition of Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital aims to support a healthier, growing community while easing hospital overcrowding and wait time issues. The project team, comprised of Plenary Group, PCL Construction, Stantec, and Johnson Controls, is working with Mackenzie Health and Infrastructure Ontario to deliver the new hospital project.
