Mackenzie Health is now officially two hospitals!
Mackenzie Health made history yesterday when Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital officially opened as a full-service hospital for the community.
In addition to our community-based locations, Mackenzie Health is now two community hospitals – Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital – each with a full-service emergency department, core services such as surgery, medicine and critical care and specialized programs.
Vaughan has been one of the fastest growing and largest cities in Canada without a hospital – until now. Our Mackenzie Health family waited so long for our second hospital to open and now our two-hospital reality is here.
All this and more in this special edition of the Insider.
Now open: a second hospital that’s second to none
With the addition of our second hospital, Mackenzie Health has doubled access to care for residents across Vaughan, Richmond Hill, King and beyond.
The Magna Emergency at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is now open to support our community and to provide much-needed relief to Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, which has one of the busiest emergency departments in Ontario.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is also now home to a number of specialized programs that were relocated from Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. The Woman and Child and Inpatient Mental Health programs and the Sorbara Integrated Stroke Unit will now serve the community from their new spaces at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital along with other core services.
But don’t just take our word for it. Hear from a few of our department chiefs, as well as our hospital and Foundation leadership as they share what it means to them to open Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

Thank you to our donors and our community
This moment would not have been possible without the support of our donors, community, government and community partners, and of course our staff, physicians and volunteers.
While the pandemic has prevented us from having an opening day community celebration the way we had originally envisioned, we look forward to marking the occasion one day soon when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, take a look at a special video message to our community from many of our elected leaders across York Region as they share their thoughts and best wishes on this historic occasion.
For additional messages from our provincial, municipal and regional government partners, take a look at our news release.
The generosity of our donors is helping to transform how we provide care to the residents of western York Region. We’ve come such a long way, but we’re not done yet. Thanks to the giving spirit of our community, we have raised more than $202 million towards our $250 million Ultimate campaign goal to build and equip Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and enhance care at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. Thank you to everyone who has made a donation. Your impact is invaluable and allows us to deliver the ultimate in care.
