Mackenzie Health was thrilled to be named a lead partner for the new York University School of Medicine, dedicated to training the next generation of family doctors. Set to open in 2028, adjacent to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, the medical school will welcome an inaugural class of 80 undergraduates. This exciting partnership will help shape the future of health care by preparing skilled professionals to not only address a shortage of primary care physicians in the province but also meet the evolving care needs in western York Region and beyond.
Mackenzie Health launched a safer, first-of-its-kind technology in Canada for intravenous (IV) pumps. The technology allows for two-way information flow between an IV pump and a patient’s electronic medical record, reducing the risk of errors and empowering clinicians to focus more on patient care and less on time-consuming processes. It represented yet another important step on our journey to zero patient harm.
We opened a new stroke rehabilitation clinic to give York Region residents timely access to vital services within days or weeks of leaving the hospital. A first for the region, this clinic – located at 955 Major Mackenzie Dr. – supports patients discharged from Mackenzie Health and Oak Valley Health with a program that includes an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker, nurse and speech-language pathologist. With stroke a leading cause of disability in Canada, this clinic is filling a longstanding need in our community.
We were recognized for our dedication to inclusion and diversity, smart technology, and sustainability. Mackenzie Health won the 2024 Excellence in Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders, showcasing our leadership in creating inclusive, equitable and accessible environments to better serve patients and support staff. We also received the KLAS Arch Collaborative Pinnacle of EHR Experience Award in the physicians and nurse categories, recognizing the highest net experience scores with electronic health records (EHR). Mackenzie Health was also awarded a 5 Percent Club Award from the Climate Challenge Network’s Greening Health Care program, recognizing members who achieve more than five per cent total energy savings from their baseline year.
Mackenzie Health hosted an inaugural Patient Safety Symposium, bringing together more than 100 health care leaders from across Ontario. The event, which featured expert speakers from Press Ganey, HIROC and Mackenzie Health, focused on how high reliability organizing (HRO) principles transform health care safety and prevent harm before it happens. By embedding HRO tools and principles across Mackenzie Health, our organization has seen a 28 per cent decrease in serious safety events, a 42 per cent decrease in patient complaints and 20 per cent fewer cases of hospital harm than the national average.
