Headed out on a summer adventure? Whether it's a spontaneous day trip, a cozy cottage weekend or a long-awaited vacation, being prepared is key to keeping your plans on track and your family safe. We asked Dr. Loredana Di Santo, Chief of Family Practice at Mackenzie Health, to share what she recommends packing in a go-to summer health kit. From bug bites to motion sickness, here are the must-have items to help you handle the unexpected and enjoy peace of mind — wherever the season takes you:
- Sunscreen – choose a broad-spectrum product and apply regularly, especially if you’re outdoors for extended periods. Consider including a lip balm with SPF for added protection.
- Insect repellent and mosquito – Essential for warding off mosquitoes and ticks.
- Tick removal tool – A simple but vital addition, especially in wooded areas.
- Tweezers – Handy for removing splinters or thorns.
- Hydrocortisone or menthol-based creams – Soothe bug bites and itchy rashes; menthol helps reduce itch by cooling the skin.
- Oral rehydration salts or electrolyte packs – for dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, or intense physical activity.
- Over-the-counter medication and wristbands used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting and dizziness associated with motion sickness.
- Allergy tablets (e.g., antihistamine)– For environmental allergies or unexpected mild allergic reactions, an Epinephrine injector pen that gives a quick shot of medicine to treat serious allergic reactions for those with severe allergies.
- Digital thermometer – To assess fevers quickly, especially in children.
- Spare medications and a list of dosages – Critical in case of emergencies or delays.
- Basic first-aid supplies – Bandages, gauze, blister cushions, antiseptic wipes and pain/fever relief (e.g., acetaminophen or ibuprofen), antibiotic ointment with lidocaine.
