Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first hospital to be built in the City of Vaughan, and the first net new hospital to be built in Ontario in more than 30 years.

As part of Mackenzie Health's two-site hospital model, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital work in tandem with Mackenzie Health’s community-based locations to provide increased access to state-of-the-art health care closer to home for the residents of western York Region and beyond.

On February 7, 2021, Mackenzie Health opened Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital to provide relief for the capacity challenges being faced across the province as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Only critical care (ICU) and medicine beds were open to bring relief to our community, as well as the province’s overstretched health system. On June 6, 2021, we were able to fully open Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital as a second hospital in our community. The new hospital is now home to specialized programs including Woman and Child, Inpatient Mental Health and Inpatient Stroke along with core services such as surgery, medicine and critical care and a full-service Emergency Department.

Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first hospital to be built in the City of Vaughan, and the first net new hospital to be built in Ontario in more than 30 years.

As part of Mackenzie Health, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is the first smart hospital in Canada, featuring fully integrated smart technology systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another to maximize information exchange and enable improved patient care. Through modern and proven best practices, the hospital provides state-of-the-art health care and positive outcomes for patients and their families. Most importantly, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital has created much-needed health care capacity for York Region, expanding access to care for our community.

Mackenzie Health is a dynamic regional health care provider which includes Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, as well as a comprehensive network of community-based services in Vaughan, Richmond Hill and the surrounding communities. The new hospital is part of a larger health care precinct which will provide a multitude of services currently being planned in collaboration with the City of Vaughan.

The Cortellucci family embodies the spirit of giving in York Region. Their long history of supporting worthy causes that work to improve the health and wellbeing of their neighbours is testament to that. In addition to their historic $40 million donation to build and equip our new hospital in Vaughan, the Cortelluccis have been long-standing supporters of Mackenzie Health. In fact, their family name has graced the walls outside the Emergency Department at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital since 2006. In recent years, the Cortellucci family has also supported Hospice Vaughan and Niagara University Vaughan. They feel so strongly about the need for a new hospital in Vaughan that they were willing to put their well-respected name behind it.

More than five years ago, Mackenzie Health Foundation launched the largest community hospital campaign in Canadian history to raise $250 million to build and equip our new Vaughan hospital and enhance care at the existing Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital.

At a joint meeting of the Mackenzie Health and Mackenzie Health Foundation Boards in May 2019, resolutions were carried to grant approval to the Chairs and President and CEOs of Mackenzie Health and Mackenzie Health Foundation to negotiate a gift agreement with the Cortellucci family for a transformational donation.

These resolutions were carried following confirmation that the transformational donor aligned with the mission, vision and values of Mackenzie Health, and that due diligence had been conducted related to a number of elements, including background check, reputation analysis and confirmation of financial capacity.

In June 2019, the Cortellucci family’s historic $40 million donation to build and equip the new Vaughan hospital was announced at the Mayor’s Gala in Vaughan. This record-setting donation is the largest single donation in Mackenzie Health’s history. Mackenzie Health and the Cortellucci family began discussions around recognition options to acknowledge the record-setting gift and the meaningful impact it would have on our community.

In December 2019, the provincial government lifted the Hospital Naming Directive, recognizing the important role philanthropy plays in health care funding and making named recognition of historic gifts like this one possible. Mackenzie Health began to do the work required by the province to be in a position to introduce Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital to our community just one year after the initial announcement of the family’s generous donation was made.

In making the decision to name the new hospital in Vaughan after a donor, Mackenzie Health was required to meet a list of expectations outlined by the provincial government to respect the interests of the communities hospitals serve. These expectations included meaningful consultation with stakeholders in the community.

In February 2020, stakeholder consultation sessions were held with a cross-section of community members, staff members and physicians to gather input and insight. The feedback we received was factored into our decision and approach to the naming announcement.

In June 2020, Mackenzie Health joined the Cortellucci family along with community leaders and dignitaries at the site of the first net new hospital in Ontario in more than 30 years to introduce Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital to the community.

We thank the Cortellucci family for their generosity and commitment to ensuring the very best care is available to everyone in our community.

After announcing their historic donation in 2019, we worked closely with the Cortellucci family to determine the appropriate recognition for their gift.

We understand our community’s connection to the Mackenzie name, but it’s important to remember that naming the Vaughan hospital after the Cortellucci family does not change the name of our organization. The Mackenzie Health brand will continue to represent safe, quality health care for our community. Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and our network of community-based locations are all important pieces that make up the larger Mackenzie Health organization. By recognizing the Cortellucci family’s historic gift in this way, we acknowledge the significant role philanthropy plays in ensuring the very best health care is available close to home, and we hope this motivates others to give in support of their community hospital as well.

More than five years ago, we undertook the largest community hospital campaign in Canadian history to raise $250 million to build and equip our new Vaughan hospital and enhance care at the existing Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. The Cortellucci family’s $40 million donation is the largest single donation in Mackenzie Health’s history. We’re already two-thirds of the way to our fundraising goal and we’re confident that a large donation like this one will only inspire even greater generosity from our community. If we set another record with an even larger single donation, we’ll work with that donor to determine the best way to recognize their incredible generosity.

To guide the planning and decision-making process for Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and the continued enhancements at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, the Mackenzie Health team established the following planning principles:

  • Optimize the patient and family experience through the eyes of the patient
  • Organize services around optimal and efficient delivery of quality patient care
  • Standardize and apply leading practices where possible
  • Design an environment congruent with Mackenzie Health core values
  • Support change through flexible facility design
  • Integrated delivery of care across sites
  • Achieve excellence in sustainable "green" design
  • Apply technology to optimize patient, staff and physician experience
  • Safety and wellness of patients, staff, physicians and volunteers is paramount
  • Enable integration of innovation and education

Creating a World-Class Health Experience

To meet the growing health care needs of the people of Richmond Hill, Vaughan and surrounding areas, and to realize our vision to create a world-class health care experience, we have designed an exciting new two-hospital model of care.

The two-hospital model of care includes the continued enhancement of services at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and building of Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.

As a regional healthcare provider serving more than one million residents in southwest York Region, our two-hospital model has grown to meet our community's rapid growth. Operating two full-service hospitals  means increased access to services and seamless and integrated care across all sites that is efficient with single governance, leadership and clinical teams.
