Mackenzie Health works directly with children and youth who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. Our programs use the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) to support children and youth with ASD and work on the domains of social/interpersonal skills, communication, cognitive functions, school readiness, responsibility/adaptive, play and leisure, self-regulation, vocational skills and challenging behaviours. Our professionals work in a variety of different environments including homes, clinics and community settings.

Mackenzie Health has been delivering autism services in Ontario for more than 40 years and has the knowledge and expertise to help support children and youth with ASD and their families. Our highly qualified team consists of Board-Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs), program coordinators, consultants/senior therapists, and instructor therapists. Additionally, our team works closely with other members of your child’s interdisciplinary team, including but not limited to psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists and teachers. Each of our service options are designed to meet the strengths of children and youth with ASD and their families and align with a child's unique and personal goals.

Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI) Classroom/Group Option

As part of this option, your child will be assigned a clinical supervisor who will work directly with an instructor therapist to implement programs based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). IBI may be delivered in a variety of teaching settings, including a clinic, centre (e.g., small groups), classroom, or in the home. Children up to age six with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Communication/language
  • Activities of daily living
  • Social/play
  • Group instruction
  • Academic skills
  • Behaviour intervention program(s)

Included in this option:

  • Individual assessment 
  • Behaviour plan
  • Individualized program(s)
  • Collaboration with other professionals (e.g., speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, school teachers, etc.).
  • Caregiver training
  • Sessions run five days a week (Monday to Friday)

Location:

York and Simcoe (this location will vary based on the availability of the groups that are available.)

School Readiness Option

As part of this option, your child will attend a classroom setting once a week with five other children. The classroom will have a clinical supervisor who will work with instructor therapists. The clinical supervisor will provide assessments and behaviour programs based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) that will help support your child’s entry into school. Children and youth up to age 14 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Communication/language
  • Activities of daily living
  • Social/play
  • Group instruction
  • Transitions/classroom routines

Included in this option:

  • Individual assessment 
  • Individual programs designed to prepare your child for school
  • School collaboration meeting to successfully transition child to school
  • Sessions run one day a week (Monday to Friday, 9a.m. to 3 p.m.) year round

Clinical Supervisor Option

As part of this option, you will be assigned a clinical supervisor to support your service delivery team. A service delivery team will be made up of individuals that can provide the ABA programming with your child.  The clinical supervisor will be available to provide assessments and programs based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) for your service delivery team to implement and monitor on an on-going basis. Children and youth up to age 18 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Individual assessment for your child
  • Behaviour plan
  • Program development for your child
  • Lead team meetings for your service delivery team
  • Training for your service delivery team
  • Collaboration with other professionals (e.g., speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, school teachers, etc.).

Location:

York and Simcoe(this service will be available to you and where you are hosting your service delivery team.)

Sessions will be provided to your team and will be based on a three-hour or six-hour time block. A team of instructor therapists may also be arranged on an as-needed basis.

Behaviour and Skill Focused Option

This model will use the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) combined with a Biopsychosocial model. A Biopsychosocial model looks at biological, psychological and social factors that might be influencing your child’s behaviour. Service will be provided through a combination of mediator training and direct teaching. This option is designed for children and youth up to age 18 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Communication/language
  • Activities of daily living
  • Social/play skills
  • Challenging behaviour reduction

Your child will be assessed in the environment that would benefit from the skill or behaviour change. From there, a behaviour plan will be developed, based on the principles of ABA. The behaviour plan will include skill acquisition programs and/or behaviour intervention program(s) to address the goals outlined.

Included in this option: 

  • Individual assessment 
  • Behaviour plan
  • Skill acquisition program(s)
  • Behaviour intervention program(s)
  • Behaviour safety plan (if required)
  • One three-hour session per week (Monday-Saturday) for 12 weeks

Location:

York and Simcoe, dependant on location of target skills. The location can include working in your home, community settings and with your school team.

Essential Skills Option

As part of this option, a consultant will follow the Essential For Living® assessment and curriculum. Essential For Living® outlines the functional life skills that may help support your child in safely and effectively participating in all environments (e.g., family, community, school). Children and youth up to age 18 with a diagnosis of moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Adaptive functioning
  • Activities of daily living

The consultant will teach adaptive functional life skills to the child/youth and their families to ensure effective daily living, promote independent functioning and increase their quality of life. This option will include a combination of mediator training and direct teaching.

Included in this option:

  • Individual assessment 
  • Behaviour plan
  • Skill acquisition program(s)
  • Behaviour intervention program(s)
  • Behaviour safety plan (if required)
  • One three-hour session per week (Monday to Saturday) for one year

Location:

York and Simcoe, dependent on location of target skills. The location can include working in your home, community settings and with your school team.

Assessment Option

As part of this option, the consultant will conduct a functional skills and/or behaviour assessment based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to identify areas of need. Children and youth up to age 18 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Assessments may include (but are not limited to):

  • Functional Behaviour Assessment
  • Verbal Behaviour Milestones and Placement Program (VB-MAPP)
  • Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills Revised (ABLLS-R)

Included in this option: 

  • Individual assessment
  • Behaviour plan
  • 10 one-hour sessions

This behaviour plan will include areas of strengths and needs as well as provide preventative strategies. Skill acquisition or behaviour intervention programs may be additionally included as needed. 

Location:

York and Simcoe, dependent on location of target skills. The location can include working in your home, community settings and with your school team.

Cognitive Services Option

In this option, your child will participate in a family-focused intervention group for children/adolescents with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a dual-diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. Your child will participate in a group with 5-6 peers following a structured curriculum, based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Children and youth between the ages of 7-13 who have a diagnosis of high-functioning ASD and a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Coping Skills

Included in this option:

  • Individual program
  • Facing Your Fears workbook
  • Caregiver training
  • One 1-hour session/week (Monday to Friday, evenings and Saturdays) for 14 weeks

Location:

York and Simcoe, this location will be based on the space being used at the time of the group.

Membership Option

This option is focused on providing your child and caregivers with a dedicated consultant for one year. The consultant will use the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) combined with a biopsychosocial model to assess your child’s needs. A biopsychosocial model looks at biological, psychological and social factors that might be influencing your child’s behaviour. Children and youth up to age 18 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are eligible.

Targeted skills may include (but are not limited to):

  • Self-injurious behaviour (SIB)
  • Aggression towards property and/or aggression towards others
  • Communication/language
  • Activities of daily living

Your child will be assessed in the environment that would benefit from the skill or behaviour change. Once the assessments are completed behaviour plans will be developed, based on the principles of ABA.

Included in this option: 

  • Individual assessment
  • Behaviour plan
  • Community safety plan (if required)
  • Training and support for parents to help with program implementation
  • Investigation of a dual diagnosis

Location:

York and Simcoe, dependent on location of target skills. The location can include working in your home, community settings and with your school team.
