This service cares for women who have higher risk pregnancies due to maternal health conditions, prior pregnancy complications or concerns in the current pregnancy. The MFM service is composed of the following sub-specialist physicians:           

Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist, Fetal Cardiologist, Obstetrical Medicine Physician and a Neonatologist

The MFM, fetal cardiology, obstetrical medicine and antenatal neonatal clinics work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care to women with higher risk pregnancies and their fetuses/newborns.

Depending on the concern, patients may be seen in one or all of the clinics listed below, at some time during their pregnancy.

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM)

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics that provides pregnancy care to women who have higher-risk pregnancies due to complex maternal medical or pregnancy history, and/or fetal or maternal complications in the current pregnancy.

Consultations generally include assessment of pregnancy risk factors, ultrasound assessment and other investigations, appropriate referrals (ie fetal cardiology clinic, antenatal clinic) and ongoing fetal surveillance as indicated.

MFM consultations and ultrasounds are performed in the clinic.

Reasons for referral may include:

  • Maternal
  • Fetal
  • Placental
 Maternal

Complex Medical Disorders:

  • Diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Chronic Hypertension
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis
  • Renal Disease
  • Antibodies
  • Graves Disease
  • ITP
  • Exposure to "teratogenic" medications etc

Complex Obstetrical History:

  • Stillbirth > 16 weeks
  • Preterm delivery < 34 weeks
  • Preeclampsia
  • Prior fetal growth restriction
  • Antibodies
  • Exposure to infections
  • Cervical incompetence

Increased Genetic Risk:

  • Advanced Maternal Age
  • Positive EFTS/ IPS results
  • Soft Markers
Fetal 
  • Growth abnormalities
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins, etc)
  • Structural abnormalities/soft markers
  • Genetic/chromosomal abnormalities 
Placental 
  • Prior pregnancy with placental issues/fetal growth restriction

  • Abnormal serum analytes on FTS/IPS

  • Risk factors for placental insufficiency

  • Abnormal placentation

Fetal Cardiology and Echocardiogram

A Fetal Echocardiogram is an ultrasound performed to assess your baby's heart

Not every pregnant patient is required to have one. A referral from your Physician is required to book a Fetal Echocardiogram appointment.

Reasons for referral may include:

  • Hereditary Heart Conditions
  • Abnormal Ultrasound results
  • Pre Gestational Diabetic patients
  • Multiple pregnancy (Twins, etc)
  • Maternal antibody abnormality or maternal lupus
  • Maternal drug exposure
  • Increased nuchal translucency

  • NT Ultrasound
  • EFTS Blood work

Obstetrical Medicine

Obstetrical Medicine Consultation appointments are for patients who may have chronic medical conditions/ diseases, or develop medical illness during pregnancy.

Reasons for referral may include:

  • Hypertension
  • Pre-eclamspsia / Eclampsia / HELLP
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Anemia
  • Elevated Liver Enzymes
  • Cholestasis of Pregnancy
  • Thromboembolism
  • Hypercoagulable state during pregnancy
  • Chest pain and Shortness of breath in pregnancy

  • Antenatal Records
  • Blood Results
  • Specialist Reports

Antenatal/Neonatal Clinic

This clinic see's patients for Antenatal consultations, follow up visit's for neonatal patients, and neonatal appointments for the RSV clinic

Reasons for referral may include:

  • Maternal conditions
  • Pregnancy related infections
  • Fetal abnormalities
  • Substance use/ exposure
  • Growth and Development
  • High Risk for Developmental delay
  • Neonatal complications

  • Antenatal Records
  • Ultrasound Reports
  • Specialist Reports
  • Blood Results
