Mackenzie Health offers programs and services for children and families experiencing significant mental health concerns causing impairment in everyday functioning. Shaw Clinic, Child and Family Services

Child and Family Services provides short-term specialized out-patient treatment for children, adolescents and their families. Our staff consists of a multi-disciplinary team of mental health professionals in psychology, social work and psychiatry.

We provide services to children, adolescents and families with a wide range of emotional and psychological problems which lead to significant impairment in various aspects of their lives such as their home, school and community.

Services Available

Child and Family Services provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescent with significant symptoms causing severe impairment in functioning in the following areas:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Mood disorders

  • Psychotic disorders

Making a Referral 

Child and Family Services will accept clients who meet the following criteria:

  • Children and adolescents between 6 to 18 years of age with significant mental illness that is causing a severe impairment in functioning; 

  • Must be referred by a physician; 

  • In cases of joint custody for individuals under the age of 16, joint consent for treatment by both parents is required.

Child and Family Services does NOT accept referrals for assessments/treatments where concerns are related principally to:

  • Legal issues
  • Active custody issues
  • Anger management
  • Behavioural disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Primary substance abuse

All services are fully covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

Clients are responsible for giving at least 24 hours advance notice of cancellations.

Physicians can refer patients by faxing the Shaw Clininc Child and  Family Services referral to 905-883-2144.

ADHD Clinic

Please note: Due to the high volume of referrals received already this academic year, the ADHD Clinic is now closed to referrals for the 2019-20 season.

Mackenzie Health's ADHD Clinic is a specialized program of Child and Family Services. The clinic is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals in psychology, social work, nursing and psychiatry.

The ADHD Clinic provides assessment and medication stabilization services to children and adolescents who are demonstrating ADHD symptoms. This includes symptoms which significantly interfere with individual development and family, school or community functioning.

We provide the following services;

  • a comprehensive ADHD assessment,
  • psychiatric consultation for patients meeting the early screening criteria,
  • short-term medication monitoring and stabilization,
  • resource information and referral to appropriate follow-up services as well as a parent education group on ADHD. 

Health Insurance: All services are fully paid under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for those with OHIP coverage.

The ADHD Clinic accepts patients referred by a physician only. Patients must live within the hospital service area or the referring physician must be affiliated with Mackenzie Health. Please call the above number to refer your patient.

Centre for Behaviour Health Sciences

Mackenzie Health's Centre for Behaviour Health Sciences provides care for individuals living in York Region or Simcoe County who have a developmental disability with a significant cognitive delay, autism or are living with the effects of an acquired brain injury. Services are offered within the community to individuals living in York Region or Simcoe County.
