Critical Care Unit (CCU)

There are two Critical Care units at Mackenzie Health:  one located at Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill and one located at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. There are 51 Critical Care beds between the 2 sites and a 12-bed long stay referral-based program for Critical Care Recovery. The Critical Care unit is a level 2 and 3 medical/surgical unit that also supports coronary care needs, stroke recovery and renal dialysis.

The Critical Care team provides care for patients who are critically ill and may require continuous cardiac monitoring, respiratory support through invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, and lifesaving medications which require continuous monitoring. As a regional dialysis center, the Critical Care unit can provide dialysis for our critically ill patients.

Patients admitted to Critical Care Unit are under the care of an intensivist (a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill patients) or a cardiologist, and a team of highly experienced Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Registered Respiratory Therapists, Registered Dietitians, Social Workers and both Physio and Occupational Therapists.

Family members should take personal items home for patients as Mackenzie Health is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Visiting hours in the hospital are from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors may be asked to step out into the waiting room between 0700-0800 and 1900-2000 visitors may be asked to wait in the waiting room to allow for the team to focus on the handover. If you remain, we ask that you do not disturb the team unless it is an urgent situation.

Be supportive to the team if you are asked to leave the room for a little while. The health care team often needs space and privacy to provide the best care for your loved one. This is a normal part of care. The Team will let you know when you can return to the room.

Critical Care requests to keep visitors to 2-3 to ensure space is available in the room to care for the patient. Please direct inquires to the Critical Care team.

At the Mackenzie Health CCU, visitors under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times during their visit to the CCU. The Critical care unit can be a scary place for young children. It may be hard to understand what is happening around them. Please speak with the nurse before you bring a child in to visit.

We recommend you reserve visiting to immediate family members to reduce to allow the patient the opportunity to recovery

If visitors are required to leave the patient’s room, please do not wait outside the room, The hallways need to remain clear so that the Healthcare team can reach your loved one and other patients quickly in case of emergency. Visitors can wait in the visitor lounge within the unit or in the Critical Care waiting area. Staff will direct visitors as to where they can wait.

The Long Stay Program at Mackenzie Health consists of 12 designated beds within the Cortullucci Vaughn Hospital (CVH)Critical Care Unit designed to optimize patients’ recovery once they have passed the acute stage of their illness.

The goal of the Long Stay Program is to support patients in weaning from the ventilator, who require additional rehabilitation services and are expected to recover once they have passed the most critical phase of their illness.

Our goal is to work with patients and families on their recovery journey. We will ensure that patients will have the best possible chance at rehabilitation and breathing without the help of a ventilator.

As home to the York Region Chronic Kidney Disease Program, Mackenzie Health is also uniquely suited to care for patients who also require renal dialysis support.

Our goal is to help advance your recovery journey out of critical care with the ultimate goal of seeing you go home to your family and loved ones.
