Mental Health Inpatient Unit for Adults
Mackenzie Health's Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital features 32 inpatient beds, all in private rooms, with eight specialized psychiatric intensive care unit beds to care for adults aged 18 and older who are dealing with an acute mental illness requiring treatment and stabilization.
With our emphasis on recovery and using the patient experience as our focus, we strive to ensure high quality care that is patient driven and has clinical value. To help in the healing process, our adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit also features plenty of natural light and safe and secure outdoor courtyards for patients and their loved ones to connect with nature and the outdoors.
The mental health program also features an expanded Active and Daily Living (ADL) program focused on self-care and social development enabling patients staying in hospital to practice daily living tasks.
Physical activity is an important therapeutic tool for mental health recovery. Therapy rooms provide patients with opportunities to use treadmills, exercise bikes, or do quiet stretching and yoga.
A Sensory Comfort Room — one of the first in a Canadian community hospital — will offer calming sensory stimulations to patients in crisis with projections designed to display calming, soothing images.
Our interprofessional team includes:
- nurses
- physicians (hospitalist/psychiatrist)
- community partners
- social workers
- patient care assistants
- occupational therapists

- dietitians
- Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN)
We value the integration of patients, families, and community providers in care. Patients can focus on their recovery by attending several therapeutic groups available daily to assist them in building skills to support their success when they return home.
