Breastfeeding

At Mackenzie Health, we believe that breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed and nurture a baby.

We endorse the World Health Organization and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommendation for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding with the introduction of age appropriate solids, until two years and beyond.

A new mother needs knowledge and practical assistance to help her have a positive breastfeeding experience. We strive to provide a high standard of care so that new mothers get the support they need to breastfeed successfully. Nurses will perform a comprehensive breastfeeding assessment of mother/baby/family to facilitate the development of a breastfeeding plan. Our trained nurses will provide breastfeeding support during your stay, connect you with the Hospital Lactation Consultant when needed and refer you to follow up support after your discharge through the Mackenzie Health Breastfeeding Clinic or York Region Public Health Breastfeeding Clinics.

Breast milk is the optimal food for infants. Breastfeeding is a rewarding experience that helps you and your baby get closer physically and emotionally. Breastfeeding results in healthier children. It reduces the risk of ear infections and gastrointestinal infections, decreases your child's risk of obesity, type II Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Disease in adulthood and promotes normal oral and teeth development. Breastfeeding is also healthier for Mothers. It helps your uterus shrink back to pre-pregnancy size and helps burn calories every day. Breastfeeding reduces a women's risk of breast, and ovarian cancer. It is also free, protects the environment and is always available.

Prenatal breastfeeding classes for expectant mothers

You are invited to join other expectant mothers for a prenatal breastfeeding class specially designed for you! This class will provide you with: Tips and techniques for effective breastfeeding and an opportunity to ask questions and network with other mothers. Visit our Pre and Post-natal Education page for more information.

Inpatient Lactation Consultants

All our professional staff in Labour and Delivery and Maternity are trained to provide support for our breastfeeding moms and babies. Because we understand that sometimes there may be additional needs, an IBCLC International Board Certified Lactation Consultant is available to visit individually with new mothers in Labour and Delivery, Postpartum Unit, pediatric Unit and Neonatal Intensive care Unit. Lactation consultants offer breastfeeding assistance and answer questions about breastfeeding before the mother and the baby discharge home.
