Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Immediately adjacent to the Operative Birthing Suites, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides advanced care for high-risk and premature infants born at 30 weeks gestation and beyond.
The NICU at Mackenzie Health is a designated Level 2C NICU which provides the highest level of neonatal care in a community hospital.
Featuring 12 spacious private suites with room for both baby and mom, Mackenzie Health’s NICU is outfitted with the latest lifesaving equipment, and actively engages families in the daily care of their tiny newborns. Each room includes space for breastfeeding and skin-to-skin care, which according to the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation can have many benefits, including helping babies gain weight and develop healthy brains, and mothers produce more milk and reduce the risk of postpartum depression. Twins can also stay in the same room as their parents in a special double room in the unit. A Care by Parent room within the NICU allows parents the opportunity to practice caring for their tiny newborns in preparation for their return home. The unit also includes a furnished family lounge with a kitchenette offering families a place to recharge while their babies are being cared for by our expert team in the NICU. You can reach the NICU by calling 905-417-2000 ext. 5440.
