Instructor-Led Courses

Mackenzie Health is dedicated to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth for our staff and physicians and beyond. We are thrilled to extend some of our certification course offerings to internal and external health care professionals interested in enhancing their competencies for the purposes of delivering excellent patient care in our community.

Courses:

Basic and intermediate health care provider courses

Eligible participants: Mackenzie Health staff and volunteers only.

Short description: This four-hour course is designed to provide basic response to medical emergencies including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automatic external defibrillator (AED) use and choking.

Cost (Staff and Volunteers only): $45

Cancellation/Withdrawal:

A minimum number of three participants is required to run a Heart and Stroke Foundation certification course. Mackenzie Health reserves the right to cancel the courses should any circumstance beyond the control of Mackenzie Health occurs including, but not limited to, the minimum class size is not met.

Additional Information: Participants must agree to respect the equipment, manikins, facilities and employees of Mackenzie Health.


You will be practicing skills that require you to work on your hands and knees, and the course requires bending, standing, and lifting. If you have any physical conditions that might prevent you from engaging in these activities, please tell an instructor. The instructor may be able to adjust the equipment if you have back, knee, or hip problems.

Food and beverage will not be included.

Participants are responsible to pay for any parking fees that may incur over the period of the course.

All participants are responsible for obtaining the required reading materials prior to attending the course and allow adequate time for review. BLS Provider Manuals can be borrowed from the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital – Vaughan Library location as well as from the Professional Practice office at the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital site in B-wing room 4927 during regular business hours. Course materials are not included in the fee. Course materials can be purchased through the Heart and Stroke Resuscitation Portal (select the “Shop” tab). Eligible participants: Mackenzie Health registered nurses, registered practical nurses and external (not employed by Mackenzie Health) registered nurses, registered practical nurses and paramedics.

Short description: This one-day course is an intermediary pediatric skills course that builds on basic life support (BLS) concepts and can be a stepping stone towards certification in pediatric advanced life support (PALS). PEARS equips health care providers who periodically care for pediatric patients with foundational skills to participate in the initial management of respiratory and shock emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest. This course teaches the skills needed to assess and manage care of an adult cardiac arrest with a focus on team dynamics through simulation.

A current Heart and Stroke Foundation Basic Life Support (BLS) provider certification is required.

Advanced health care provider courses

Short description: This two-day course is designed for health care providers who participate in the management of adult cardiac arrhythmias, cardiovascular emergencies, and cardiopulmonary arrest. You must have a passing score of 70 per cent. Certification will expire within three months of completion.
