Vaughan, ON (January 1, 2024) — Today, Mackenzie Health welcomed its first baby of 2024 at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital – Mia, born at 12:27 a.m., weighing 7 lbs, 14 oz. This is the first baby for proud parents Vic and Katie from Maple.

“We’re very grateful to everyone here,” said Vic and Katie. “Having the first baby of 2024 was really special.”  An image of new parents, Vic and Katie with their new baby. Katie is in the hospital bed with Vic standing beside her. Katie is holding the baby.

The Woman and Child program at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital offers a one-stop suite of services accessible by direct elevator to support women and children through pregnancy and delivery to neonatal and pediatric care.

Mackenzie Health relocated its Woman and Child program to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital from Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital when the new hospital opened in June 2021. It provides a full range of services for mothers and children conveniently located on one floor accessible by a direct elevator. The program offers access to a wide variety of specialists close to home, including obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives, neonatologists, maternal-fetal doctors for high-risk pregnancies, social workers, psychiatrists, diabetes coordinators and lactation consultants to help new moms with breastfeeding. By relocating the program to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, Mackenzie Health has significantly increased its capacity to bring babies into the world. In 2023, the labour and delivery team at Mackenzie Health supported thousands of families delivering more than 3,800 babies. This is compared to the 2,650 babies delivered at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital in 2020.

The Woman and Child program at Mackenzie Health includes state-of-the-art birthing suites, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a Pediatric unit, and pregnancy, newborn and pediatric clinics. These are all conveniently located at our hospitals so women and children can transition easier and faster between services, and health care providers can collaborate on care plans that honour the needs, expectations and beliefs of the entire family. In 2023, Mackenzie Health expanded the Woman and Child program to offer a Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic (PUCC) at both Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital to be able to care for even more sick kids across Richmond Hill, Vaughan and King. There have been more than 6,800 visits to the Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic since it opened across both hospitals.
