X-Ray

An X-ray is an imaging test that creates pictures of the inside of the body. This page provides information about X-ray services at Mackenzie Health.

Mackenzie Health is pleased to provide X-rays on a walk-in basis, with a signed physician requisition, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Referring a Patient

A completed diagnostic imaging requisition form must be completed by a physician for patients to be referred for an X-ray at Mackenzie Health.

Please ensure the requisition form includes the referring physician's information and signature, the patient's information and clinical history, and the reason for referral.

To obtain a copy of the requisition form, visit the referral and consent forms page. Physician offices can fax a patient requisition form to 905-883-2043.

How do I prepare for my X-ray?

Depending on your X-ray, some patients may be advised to change into a hospital gown.

What do I need to do the day of my visit?

Please ensure you bring a valid health card with you along with the signed requisition form from your physician.

Can I have an X-ray test if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Please contact your referring physician if you are pregnant. Please also notify the technologist if there is any chance of pregnancy before the exam takes place, as an embryo is sensitive to radiation, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.

X-ray procedures can be performed while pregnant; however, in some cases precautions may be taken to protect you and your baby. Your exam may be rescheduled. You may breastfeed immediately after X-ray.

What are the benefits and risks of X-ray?

X-ray is an imaging tool which enables physicians to look at many body systems, including the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems. The test will be used by referring physicians to help determine a diagnosis and treatment.

There is always a small chance of bleeding or infection any time skin is broken. The risk is extremely small because the procedure is not conducted near any major blood vessels and is performed under sterile conditions.

How much radiation am I getting and is it dangerous?

Any amount of radiation can cause harm; however we keep radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable by using the least amount of radiation needed to get a high-quality image. Lead shielding will be provided if you are in childbearing age or upon request as long as it will not obstruct the area of interest.

You can register for MyChart when scheduling an appointment or you can self-sign up online at mychart.mackenziehealth.ca.

If your appointment is at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital:

  • You may park in one of the visitors parking lots (North or South) and make your way to the C-Wing or D-Wing entrance.
  • Please allow yourself extra time during peak hours, as finding parking can take longer than expected. If possible, consider taking public transit, or getting dropped off by a family member or friend.

If your appointment is at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital:

  • You may park in the visitor parking lots at the west of the building. 
  • Access to the hospital is through the Main Entrance at the south side of the building (6:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.) or through the west of the hospital (24/7 access). Drop-off  and pick-up is available at both entrances.
