Mackenzie's Health's record of quality, safety and innovation is reflected in numerous awards for our programs and people.
Recognitions and awards of note:
Mackenzie Health received the Provincial Eligible Approach Rate award from Ontario Health (Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN)) for demonstrating leading practices by facilitating donation discussion between Ontario Health (TGLN) and eligible patients and/or families of patients at the end of life. Thanks to the dedication of the Mackenzie Health staff, the organization was successful in reaching an eligible approach rate of 96 per cent, exceeding the target of 90 per cent set by Ontario Health (TGLN).
In 2022 and 2023, Mackenzie Health supported seven organ donors, which led to 15 organs being donated for transplant, saving 12 lives. Additionally, there were 30 tissue donors, enhancing the lives of many others.
The Healthcare Information and Management System Society (HIMSS) has awarded Mackenzie Health the 2023 Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence for the second time after first being recognized in 2019. This makes it the only organization outside the United States to achieve such an accomplishment.
Mackenzie Health has received this recognition for its innovative application of health information and technology to improve the way care is delivered, create more positive patient outcomes and support the overall health of broader population.
The Canadian College of Health Leaders named Mackenzie Health as the winner of the 2023 Excellence in Patient Safety Award. This award recognizes individuals and teams that are committed to transforming and improving patient safety within a health care environment, through leadership, culture change, quality improvement, patient partnership and innovation. Being recognized by the Canadian College of Health Leaders with this award for Mackenzie Health’s work on its journey towards Zero Harm is a testament to the commitment of the staff, physicians and volunteers who put patient safety first and help ensure patients have the best care experience every day.
We're pleased to share that we have received revalidation of Stage 7, the highest level on the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) which measures the level at which an organization adopts and uses electronic medical records (EMR) to Stage 7. Revalidation recognizes Mackenzie Health's continued use of innovative health care solutions to support high-quality, safe and efficient care to our growing community that helps deliver on our promise of creating a world-class health experience. The revalidation means our highly engaged EMR culture helps drive robust safety, quality and patient experience outcomes that benefits both the hospital and patients in our community.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was awarded LEED Silver Certification in 2021. This award recognizes newly constructed buildings that have integrated sustainability principles into design and construction, and focus on reducing operating costs and carbon footprint. The hospital is equipped with green roofs, LED lighting and high-efficiency HVAC systems that help reduce energy needs as well as fixtures and systems to improve water use efficiencies.
In 2021, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital won the gold award in infrastructure and was recognized for demonstrating innovation and excellence in a public-private partnership venture. The CCPPP awards committee recognized the hospital’s ability to pivot ahead of opening and the use of innovations deployed by the consortium such as prefabricated modules keeping the project on time and on budget.
Engineering News Records presented Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital with one of the highest accolades in the construction industry when it awarded the new hospital with the Global Best Projects Award of Merit in 2021, the only Canadian project to be recognized that year. ENR awards this prestigious accolade to recognize a project that has overcome challenges, managed the risks and benefited from the rewards of an internationally designed and constructed project.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was awarded the highest honour in the modular construction industry when it was presented with the award of distinction recognizing architectural excellence, technical innovation and cost efficiency exemplifying best practices in a variety of categories in modular construction. In 2021, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital was recognized as highly commended at the international P3 Awards in the Social Infrastructure Project of the Year for design, construction and unique partnerships and collaborative approach resulting in completion of the project on time and on budget.
In 2020, Mackenzie Health was the only hospital in Canada to earn 2020 CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recognition. Leveraging the robust technology system it already had in place, Mackenzie Health was able to deliver quick and effective solutions to address challenges associated with delivering care during a global pandemic and is being recognized for it.
In July 2020, The York Region District Stroke Centre team at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital received the 3M Health Care Quality Team Award from the Canadian College of Health Leaders for using health information and technology to improve the way we deliver care to stroke patients.
Mackenzie Health was named a 2019 recipient of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence. This award recognizes Mackenzie Health for thoughtful application of health information and technology to substantially improve clinical care delivery, patient outcomes and population health.
In 2019, Mackenzie Health was recognized nationally by Canada’s Safest Employers and was the silver winner of the 2019 Wellness Award. The award recognizes workplaces across the country for their organizational leadership in health and wellness programming and exceptional achievements in promoting the health and safety of workers. Over the past few years, Mackenzie Health’s Wellness program has provided staff, physicians and volunteers with countless opportunities including fitness classes like yoga and Zumba, healthy lifestyle sessions and seminars, and stress reduction initiatives, including craft workshops, art and dog therapy sessions.
Mackenzie Health has been recognized as one of 2018 HealthCare’s Most Wired winners, as well as the only Canadian hospital to achieve this recognition in 2018. The CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired program not only recognizes those organizations that demonstrate excellence in healthcare IT implementation and innovation, but also serves as an invaluable tool to aid all participating organizations in planning and developing future healthcare IT projects.

Richmond Hill/Vaughan, ON -Mackenzie Health has been recognized by HIMSS Analytics for achieving Stage 6 on the HIMSS Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model (EMRAM). This is an international benchmark for the use of advanced Information Technology (IT) to improve patient care. Mackenzie Health is the first Canadian hospital with a full-suite Epic EMR and one of four Ontario community hospitals to have achieved this designation to date.
In 2017, Mackenzie Health received the Innovation Award from the Richmond Hill Board of Trade. This award recognizes Mackenzie Health’s development of the Mackenzie Innovation Institute (Mi2) which fosters new partnerships and health care innovations that could be adopted across Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.
Mackenzie Health is proud to announce it has achieved what few organizations have - earning Accreditation with Exemplary Standing from Accreditation Canada for the second consecutive evaluation!
In March 2015, Mackenzie Health was awarded Stroke Distinction status, making it the only Ontario organization to receive both acute and rehab stroke accreditation
Mackenzie Health received the 2014 Project Team - Innovation & Care Delivery Award for implementing an innovative IT solution that helps improve patient flow and quality of care.
Mackenzie Health received the 2014 Gold Quality Healthcare Workplace Awards - for the second consecutive year - for its extensive efforts to improve work life for staff and physician
Mackenzie Health's Chief Nursing Executive and Chief Practice Officer, Tiziana Rivera, was the 2013 winner of the Margret Comack Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership.
Mackenzie Health received the 2013 Healthcare Safety Award for implementing smart pumps with sophisticated drug libraries and intravenous medication error-prevention software across the organization.
Mackenzie Health received the 2013 Booth Centennial Green Award for its strong commitment to going green and using reusable textiles in the Operating Room.
In 2012, Mackenzie Health was designated as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) through the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), the first hospital in York Region to receive this recognition.
