Nursing

There are many exciting opportunities in Nursing at Mackenzie Health. This page will provide you with a detailed overview of our nursing team as well as how you can join it.

Let's get started by showing you around the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital Emergency Department on the main level. Like most Emergency departments, it's a busy place.

There is a buzz of activity, nurses criss-crossing over the floor to check in with patients and help out wherever they are needed. At the nursing station, some of the nurses are reviewing orders using our Epic Electronic Medical Record system. One of the nurses, Angela, is talking to Taylor, a new member of the team.

As an experienced nurse, Angela was given the opportunity to help train new nurses that join Mackenzie Health through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program. The program allows recent nursing graduates to get a full-time job at Mackenzie Health to kick start their careers.

The program is designed to support Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses who are within 12 months of registering with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) by providing them with a full-time employment opportunity.

Eligible nurses must use the NGG Online Portal and follow the registration and matching process outlined below:

  • Visit the NGG Online Portal and register as a Nursing User.
  • Apply for positions with organizations and match with an Employer on the NGG Online Portal.
  • Obtain Registration with the CNO.
  • Complete the Transition into Practice Period.

Seeing Taylor's growth inspired Angela to learn more about Mackenzie Health's continuing education initiatives that provide support for nurses to gain additional skills.

With the Preceptorship Workshop run by the Professional Practice and Learning and Organizational Development departments, Angela has been able to learn more about the role of a preceptor, and how to become a better mentor and provide effective feedback when training new nurses like Taylor. Along with the workshop, Angela has continued learning through general skill building opportunities, such as onboarding, Nursing Skills Day and Education Day.

As a next step, Angela looked towards achieving her specialized certifications, and when she shared her goals with her nursing team, Angela found that her co-workers also jumped into providing her more opportunities to learn hands-on. From critical cases that come through the Emergency doors to difficult situations, they have provided the support she needs to excel in her career. It's all about the possibilities, and it's the generous and supportive individuals that make up our team that makes all the difference.

The ultimate financial support

Angela has big dreams for her career in nursing, but the cost of taking additional courses from accredited organizations or attending conferences can sometimes be too much.

When Angela was looking to attend a conference with guest speakers and workshops that aligned with her career goals, she applied to the Mackenzie Health Bursaries for Nursing program, a unique opportunity that provides nurses with financial support to take additional courses and attend conferences in order to continue learning.

Angela is also considering applying for the Critical Care Certificate program that we are currently offering to nurses, both already working at the hospitals and those that are looking to join the team. In partnership with an accredited college, Mackenzie Health will pay for tuition and her time attending the program. After she completes the program, not only will Angela be a certified Critical Care Nurse, but she will also be offered full-time employment in Critical Care. It's an opportunity that Angela doesn't want to pass up.

As a Nurse, you will be eligible to apply for bursaries once a year in May during nursing week that can be used for courses and conferences. Each bursary is tailored for different specialities or areas.

Approximately $2,600 worth of bursaries were awarded last year.
