Accommodations

Mackenzie Health offers a variety of comfortable accomodations at our hospitals. You can find further details about the different types of rooms we offer below.

Mackenzie Health offers private, semi-private and standard ward accommodations. Every attempt is made to fulfill the patient's request for private and semi-private accommodations; however, this can be limited by availability. There are additional costs for private and semi-private rooms.

Note: prices for preferred accommodations are subject to change without notice. Charges for semi-private or private rooms (i.e. preferred accommodations) are not covered by any provincial health plans or by Mackenzie Health. Patients, their guarantors or insurance plans are responsible for full payment.

To enhance our patients' hospital stays, our friendly Registration staff will work with you to arrange your preferred accommodation request. We offer all our patients the opportunity to request a Preferred Accommodation. Preferred Accommodation rooms include private and semi-private rooms.

While we will make every effort in ensuring your request for preferred accommodation is made possible, your requested accommodation may not be available to you at the time of your admission. During your stay we may need to relocate you to another room to accommodate other patients with unique medical needs.  We will do everything possible to minimize any room transfer disruptions and inconveniences.

Room type:

Ward

A standard patient room at Mackenzie Health has three (3) or four (4) beds per room, with privacy curtains. The cost of this room is generally covered by federal and provincial  health insurance (i.e. OHIP for Ontario residents). This policy does not apply to visitors to Canada or uninsured residents or for procedures such as cosmetic surgery. In these cases, arrangements will be made for payment upon, or prior to, admission.

In the Centre for Continuing Care and Rehabilitation, ward accommodation refers to two-bed rooms.

For the first three (3) months following an application to OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), you are covered by your previous provincial health care plan for a standard ward room. You are responsible for the full payment of preferred accommodations (private or semi-private rooms).

When you register, you'll be asked for your room preference and secondary health insurance information.

Upon admission, you will complete and sign a billing consent form, noting your first and second choice for accommodations.

For patients with a valid OHIP card, if you have secondary insurance, Mackenzie Health will assist you in submitting your inpatient claim to a valid insurer after your discharge from the hospital.

For non-OHIP patients, if you have private insurance and your stay is longer than three (3) days, Mackenzie Health will assist in submitting a claim to a valid insurer after your discharge from the hospital.

You must provide:

  • name of insurance company
  • policy and certificate number
  • policy holder
  • group name

Out-of-province patients will provide the information above along with:

  • valid health card from home province
  • completed declaration form
  • proof of out-of-province permanent address

International patients will be required to provide:

  • name of insurance company
  • policy and certificate number
  • policy holder
  • group name
  • case or claim number
  • valid credit card to cover all charges

If your secondary or private health insurer denies the claim, you or your guarantor are responsible for full payment.

Once discharged, we encourage patients to contact Financial Services to pay any outstanding balances.

Alternatively, when signing your billing consent, you can request a call from Financial Services to provide your credit card information over the phone or to receive a bill in the mail.

Residents who are new to Ontario and have a valid health card from another province may be covered by their previous provincial health plan. Landed immigrants without OHIP coverage must pay for all costs associated with their treatment.

You are required to pay for the account in full, upon discharge. It is your responsibility to submit your own insurance claim to your insurance company for all hospital charges.

If you have private health insurance and your stay is longer than three (3) days, a Mackenzie Health Financial Services representative will assist in submitting a claim to a valid insurer after your discharge from the hospital.

Patients must contact their insurance company to start the claim process.

If your health insurer denies the claim, you or your guarantor are responsible for full payment. Once discharged, we encourage you to contact Financial Services to pay any outstanding balances.

The initial room and bed charge includes a 24-hour period from the time of admission. Additional room charges apply if the patient remains an inpatient in excess of eight (8) hours beyond any 24-hour period in which a room and bed fee was already charged.

Patients without private insurance coverage must provide Financial Services with a valid credit card. Financial Services will process your credit card at the time of your admission. All charges incurred will be applied to the credit card.

Can the hospital verify my secondary or private insurance with the insurer?

Due to privacy concerns, the hospital is unable to verify insurance coverage and assumes no responsibility to verify any patient's insurance coverage. It is the responsibility of the patient to verify your insurance coverage, including any limits.

My secondary health insurance is limited, can I provide my spouse’s insurance?

Yes, however you can only provide one secondary health insurance plan (patient or spouse). Mackenzie Health will submit a claim to only one insurance company. Please choose which secondary health insurance plan you wish to provide.

Can I still request a private or semi-private room if I don’t have a secondary or private health insurance plan?

Yes. You will be asked to sign for your request and will be billed accordingly.

If I would like to change my room preference request now that I am on a unit, what do I do?

Please let your nurse know. They will contact a team member to come up to the unit to sign for your updated request.

Am I guaranteed to get the room I choose?

We will make every effort to provide you with the room you have requested. Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. However, sometimes the room you request may not be available due to medical or infection control needs.

How can I obtain a copy of my billing consent form?

For patients who are active on our patient portal, MyChart, an electronic copy of their signed billing consent will be saved to their account. For patients not signed up for MyChart, a paper copy can be requested upon completion.

What if I have other questions?

For additional questions, please call Financial Services at 905-883-1212 or 905-417-2000 ext 3168.
