Birthing suites

We offer expert and compassionate care for mothers and their babies before, during and immediately after giving birth.

The Woman and Child program at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital delivers something that every parent wants – an environment and expertise that offers a special welcome to the newest member of their family. We offer expert and compassionate care for mothers and their babies before, during and immediately after giving birth.

The focus of our care is to recognize your expectations and promote an excellent birth experience for you and your family. We encourage you to take an active role in your care. As a new parent eagerly awaiting the arrival of your new baby, you may find there is a lot to learn and remember. We invite you to review the directions and reference materials provided to you. We also encourage you to discuss your care, and any questions you may have, with your health care team.

The Woman and Child program features a model of care where most moms will labour, deliver, and recover in the same room with a private washroom that features either a shower or hydrotherapy tub. Our postpartum rooms where moms continue their recovery also offer plenty of space including an extra bed for family to spend the night and a large private washroom with a shower. 

All patients will be required to complete the online registration process as soon as possible to ensure your clinical team has the information they need for your delivery.

Your obstetrician or midwife’s office will have provided you with a postcard detailing how to complete your registration online. We are happy to also provide these instructions here for you as well.

To complete your registration, you will need to:

  • Log in or sign up at mackenziehealth.ca.
  • Once logged in, from the Visits menu, select Register for My Delivery and follow the prompts.
  • Ensure you've completed the Obstetrical Registration and History questionnaires.
  • Download and review your Mother and Baby Education Guide.
  • 60 days (or 2 months) before your due date, log back in and an e Check-in button will appear for you to confirm some additional information including identifying allergies and medications.

If you are scheduled for a C-Section, please follow the instructions below:

  • Log in or sign up at mackenziehealth.ca.
  • Once logged in, from the Visits menu, select Appointments and Visits and select the Details button next to your upcoming C-Section to:
    • Review appointment details
    • Download and review your Mother & Baby Education Guide
    • Complete your Obstetrical Registration and History Questionnaires
  • From the Profile menu, update your Demographics and Family Physician information
  • From the Health menu, review and update your Allergies and Medications on file at Mackenzie Health.

From the Billing menu, review and update your OHIP, secondary insurance and select your room preference.

Mackenzie Health offers classes to help you prepare for everything from giving birth to caring for yourself and your baby in the weeks after delivery. This includes classes that help you prepare for delivery, including how to choose the best pain management option, and provide clarity around different induction methods. We also offer classes that teach you what to expect once you leave the hospital, including how to feed your baby, the benefits of breastfeeding, aftercare for mom and how to monitor baby’s health. Upon your arrival, you will be directed to the triage area where staff will make a quick and accurate assessment around the health and well-being of both mother and baby. This area features specialized diagnostic and monitoring equipment that allow us to do just that, including an ultrasound machine and fetal monitoring units. After this assessment and based on the condition of mother and baby, you and your care team will develop a plan of care that’s right for you. Our unit features 11 labour, delivery, and recovery rooms. Each spacious room includes a sleeper sofa for family, a large private washroom with a shower or hydrotherapy tub, and hidden cabinetry to keep equipment safe and accessible. The suites were designed to provide a home-like setting to allow for family members to share in the birth experience and allow mothers to go through labour, give birth and recuperate in the most relaxing atmosphere possible. For many reasons, babies are sometimes delivered by a caesarean section (c-section). In most cases, your obstetrician plans your c-section in advance due to an existing medical condition, or a previous birth by c-section. Other times, a c-section is performed because of additional concerns related to the health of the baby or mother. With anesthesia, women are able to remain comfortable during the procedure. Although recovery and the hospital stay takes a little longer for women undergoing a C-section, most are ready to go home within 36 to 48 hours.

We have two operative birthing suites for women experiencing scheduled or emergency caesarean-section births and other birth-related procedures. Each suite includes room for loved ones to participate in the birth, a care area for assessment and treatment of newborns immediately following delivery, as well as quick access to a resuscitation area for resuscitating newborns who have experienced complications during delivery.

We have four recovery bays next to our operating suites where you will be recovering after your cesarean section alongside your baby and support person. A dedicated nurse will ensure you and your baby are doing well and once the recovery period is over, you will be transferred to the Mother and Baby unit for the rest of your stay.

Our multidisciplinary team of caregivers will be there to support mom and baby immediately after the birth until it's time to go home. Our team supports both mom and baby with their physical and emotional health and that all questions and concerns are answered before they are discharged. Exams are done with mom and baby beside each other. Mothers are informed of what to expect in the weeks following birth. They are taught how to feed their baby, the benefits of breast feeding and proper hygiene, and how to monitor the baby's health. At Mackenzie Health, we believe that breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed and nurture a baby. We endorse the World Health Organization and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommendation for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding with the introduction of age-appropriate solids, until two years and beyond.

A Lactation Consultant is available on site to help new moms adjust to breastfeeding their newborn while in the hospital. Follow-up appointments with the Lactation Consultant can also be booked both in person and virtually.

Staff with specialized training in the Infant Hearing Screening Program offer screening to help identify newborn infants with hearing loss before they go home. The screening involves placing a small earphone in the baby's ear. Soft sounds are played through the earphone and the ear's response is measured and recorded. Infants whose hearing loss is identified early will be able to get the services they need to develop language and hearing skills much sooner than in the past.
