Today Mackenzie Health shared a project update with members of the Vaughan business community. Included in that update are some of its projections for construction jobs in the building of the hospital as well as the expected healthcare employment and business opportunities in association of the opening of the hospital in 2019.
According to Mackenzie Health President and CEO Altaf Stationwala, based on the numbers of jobs created for similar sized hospital projects, Mackenzie Health expects that over 1,000 new construction jobs will be created in the building of the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital slated to begin construction in late 2015.
Mackenzie Health estimates that over 1,900 high quality jobs will come to Vaughan based on the over 1,800 staff and 100 new physicians that will be required to provide care at Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. Those estimates include a wide range of clinical positions such as nurses, respiratory, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and dietitians to name a few as well as support service jobs such as information technology, building maintenance, food services, financial services and administration. New medical staff opportunities will include such highly trained physician specialists such as surgeons, emergentologists (specially trained emergency doctors), neurologists and maternal health specialists.
Currently Mackenzie Health does business with over 150 companies in York Region, with that number expected to grow with the opening of the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. The wide range of local suppliers in Vaughan include companies that provide medical and dental imaging systems, electric heating equipment and systems, linens, information technology (computer systems), forklifts, drapery and carpet as well as innovative medical devices just to name a few.
Focus on Innovation
Also highlighted at today’s update is Mackenzie Health’s focus on innovation including four ‘first-in-Canada’ innovations developed by Mackenzie Health in partnership with the business community. A new Innovation Unit features a wide range of technologies including smart beds, badges that facilitate real-time patient to nurse communications, smart hand hygiene stations that prompt caregivers to remember to wash hands at the appropriate times, and electronic signs and screens that provide real time status updates and remote monitoring of patients.
Other innovation projects include: electronic equipment monitoring and preventative maintenance system, automated calls to the homes of discharged patients that trigger live follow-up calls by a nurse as appropriate, and the implementation of hospital-wide nursing best practices that has enhanced the quality of nursing care across the hospital.
