GPA Basics (Gentle Persuasive Approaches in Dementia Care)

Course Description:
GPA is an innovative dementia care education curriculum based on a person centered approach to patient care.

GPA Basics Education is a full-day (7.5-hour) education session led by GPA Certified Coaches and designed to address individual learning styles via a motivating mix of experiential exercises, video clips, whiteboard animation, mini lectures, role play and discussion.

GPA is multidisciplinary and comprehensive in its delivery. It is evidence based, incorporating collective, established evidence from the dementia context and empirical evidence derived from extensive evaluations of GPA within organizations.

GPA Basics Education comprises 4 modules:

  1. An Introduction to Personhood
  2. Brain and Behaviour
  3. The Interpersonal Environment
  4. Gentle Persuasive Techniques for Respectful Self-Protection (solo and in teams)

Learning Objectives: By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  1. understand that a person with dementia is an unique human being capable of interacting with the outside world
  2. explain the relationship between the disease process and a persons behavioural response
  3. apply emotional, environmental, and interpersonal communication strategies to prevent and defuse responsive behaviours
  4. demonstrate suitable and respectful physical techniques to use in situations of risk

Target Audience: Nursing, Allied Health, any staff that work with senior patients in the workplace

Duration: 7.5 hours
