How to Have Conversations About Race: 3 Critical First Steps

This event has expired.
May 3, 2021 @ 12:00 AM

This is part 1 in a 2 part pre-recorded webinar series.

Talking about race is a layered and complex issue. Because of this, it’s easy for people to feel vulnerable, nervous, or even fearful about having these important conversations. But having them is essential for creating a truly inclusive work culture. So how do you even start?

Leveraging the same communication skills you use for any difficult discussion is key, but when it comes to having conversations about race, there are 3 concepts that you must understand before the conversation even starts in order for it to be a meaningful one — trust, identity, and power.

Ancella Livers, an expert in the field of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and author of “Leading in Black and White” engages in a discussion with Nicole Forward from the Center for Creative Leadership to gain valuable insights about the critical concepts that inform and lay the groundwork for any conversation about race, both in the workplace and beyond.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • How trust, identity, and power play into any race conversation
  • Ideas for doing your own identity work
  • The difference between positional power and racial power and how they intersect in conversations about race
